Canine Rescue announced the start-up phase of its Be-a-Buddy Program a little over one
year ago.  This new program, one of the Rescue’s newest, had been in the planning stage for
quite a while so we are very happy to give an update and review the details.

The Be-a-Buddy Program started out as a vision that would allow our supporters to be more
closely connected to the specific needs of the dogs at Canine Rescue.  What began as an
idea has been growing just as the number of dogs the Rescue cares for has been growing.
In December 2004, we were caring for 10 dogs. In March 2006, when the program started, we
had 23 adult dogs in our Rescue.  Today, we are caring for 16 - 20 dogs.  We’ve been able to
increase the overall number of dogs we care for due to the increase in foster homes and
also because of the generosity of Harrwood Kennels and Kinship Kennels.  Naturally, the
more dogs that come in to the Rescue, more dogs have a chance at going out of the
shelter…out to their forever home.

With the increase in the number of dogs in the Rescue comes an increase in the cost of
operations.  When you take a look at the Rescue’s Treasurer’s Report in our newsletters, you
must notice that our two major expense areas are boarding fees and medical costs/supplies
which includes items such as food, crates, and leashes/collars.  Since our inception we have
adopted out over 150 adult dogs!  All of these dogs leave us with their shots up-to-date and
spay/neuter needs taken care of, with the Rescue bearing much of the cost.  We have also
taken in several dogs that, during their stay with us, have ended up needing more extensive
medical care.  Fortunately, we were able to see to their needs as well.  Finally, we currently
have a few residents that we call Sanctuary dogs due to their special physical and/or
emotional needs.  Out of these needs came the idea for the Be-a-Buddy Program.

The Be-a-Buddy Program gives you, our contributors, a choice—you can designate into which
area you would like your donation directed.  Or, you can choose to help a specific canine.  We
have set up three Be-a-Buddy categories:  the Home-Away-From-Home Buddy sponsors
boarding for a Rescue dog; the Wellness Buddy sponsors medical care for a Rescue dog; and
the Cuddle Buddy sponsors a Sanctuary dog.

This program is now entering its second year.  Future plans include Buddy updates on our
Sanctuary dogs and the ability to sponsor a specific kennel run.  This type of sponsorship will
allow the supporter to “temporally adopt” the canine in that run, obtain updates on its stay
with us, and be informed about its happy ending.

We have an included a sponsorship form in our most recent newsletter (mailed in early May
2007) and there is a sponsorship form available on this
website.  There is no minimum
donation to be a Buddy--any amount is gratefully appreciated.  We continue to be very
excited about the Be-a-Buddy Program and hope that you want to be a Buddy and help our
Rescue continue to grow and help more Canines in the years to come!
